Nuestra diversidad es nuestra fuerza

Me postulo para el Senado estatal porque creo que la diversidad de Pawtucket es nuestra fortaleza. Creo que somos una comunidad mejor y más saludable cuando abrazamos a todos los que quieren participar y cuando buscamos nuevas formas de involucrarnos mutuamente. Creo que nuestras mejores decisiones se toman cuando las tomamos juntas.

ANTECEDENTES

Vengo de una familia de personas trabajadoras y amantes de la diversión. Mi madre, Beth, enseñó biología en las escuelas públicas de New Hampshire, donde nací, y mi padre, Seth, construyó sistemas sépticos. Crecí en una familia revoltosa y mezclada de hermanos y hermanastros; Asistí a la escuela secundaria pública y comencé a esperar mesas cuando tenía catorce años.

Como antiguo organizador comunitario, originalmente me mudé a Pawtucket cuando asistía a la escuela de posgrado. Me gradué de Smith College, y tengo una maestría de la Universidad de Chicago, y un doctorado de Brown. Ahora trabajo como profesor en UMass Boston, en la Escuela para la Inclusión Global y el Desarrollo Social. Soy activo en el liderazgo sindical en la Universidad, y también he enseñado en las instituciones correccionales para adultos de RI y en la Universidad de Brown.

There is nowhere in the world I would rather be than Rhode Island, and I care deeply about building a state that is equitable, thriving, and inclusive.

EXPERIENCIA COMUNITARIA

Traigo a la oficina experiencia en políticas y organización comunitaria. Además de cumplir dos mandatos en el Concejo Municipal de Pawtucket, fui becaria en el Women's Policy Institute en Rhode Island. Soy un sociólogo que escribe libros y artículos sobre cambio social. Trabajé durante varios años con niños en el sistema de cuidado de crianza, así como en Amnistía Internacional, una conocida organización de defensa de los derechos humanos. Soy fundador de dos organizaciones sin fines de lucro y tengo puestos de liderazgo en varias juntas locales. Yo hablo espanol fluido.

I am co-founder of Crash Pawtucket, an organization that showcases small businesses in the city in partnership with neighborhood and community groups. I was a member of the Rhode Island State Housing Appeals Board. I also served on the Pawtucket Juvenile Hearings Board, a restorative justice program aimed at keeping children out of legal trouble.

I love people, I love Rhode Island, and I am committed to seeing us flourish. I believe that our community is stronger when we engage each other and this belief is behind everything I do: whether that’s organizing #ChalkTheBlockPawtucket for Earth Day, or starting a community garden. I jog with my dog Marvin all over town; I’ve played my trumpet with the Extraordinary Rendition Band during the Oak Hill Halloween Hootenanny, during the Pawtucket Arts Festival and at PVDFest; I’ve taught college in many different places, organized community dinners, and tutored kids after school. Community is the very stuff of life.

I believe that the job of an elected official is to ensure our that our community is heard, and to help build a world that helps everyone thrive. I am a passionate advocate for housing, climate justice and sustainability, a green economy, accessible universal healthcare, including reproductive healthcare, workers’ rights, racial justice, the arts, and safe and inclusive communities. We need to build an environment that encourages students to learn, families to thrive, and communities to flourish. We need to do so with energy and vision.
